3 Unusual Formats For Auctions on eBay

eBay users are accustomed to only two "standard" formats for
sales on eBay: either the 'regular' auction which involves
bidding and waiting; and the Buy It Now, which is an instant
purchase.

But there are three other formats that are less well known.

1. Live Auctions

Before eBay, the traditional auction included live bodies in
chairs and an auctioneer up front (talking so fast he was
frequently unintelligible). Any buyer can still participate
in these live auctions via eBay. Live auctions are a hybrid
- a buyer is 'sort of' present in a live setting yet is at
home using an Internet connection.

The products for sale are usually expensive and unusual.
There are such items as expensive and unique coins, Asian
art, native American artifacts, incredible jewelry, costly
furniture, memorabilia from major sports stars and even
history. Today, for instance, there are documents signed by
John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, James Madison and Ulysses
Grant (he confides that he was strenuously opposed to the
"wicked" war with Mexico).

that you register first because you can't just drop in on a

2. Private Auctions

Private auctions are similar to the typical auction that
we're all familiar with except for one detail - the
identities of the bidders are kept secret. Only the seller
has access to the names.

Why would anyone create a private auction? It's usually for
one of three reasons:

* The item is quite expensive and buyers might be
uncomfortable having others know they can afford such
merchandise. Their concern about their financial status is
most likely misplaced because it is quite possible to
distance yourself from eBay contact information, but much of
selling is about perception.

* The buyers might be embarrassed by the nature of the
merchandise.

* Some sellers habitually use private auctions to make it
harder for their competition to snoop on them.

3. Restricted Access Auctions

This is usually for sales of "adult" items. The main purpose
is to prevent children from seeing this kind of merchandise,
and is similar to having covers on racy magazines at store
checkouts.

To bid on these items, the buyer must:

* Be 18 years old

* Must have supplied credit card information to eBay.The
theory is that no one under 18 can get a credit card and
therefore cannot get into these sections.

* Agree that he is voluntarily accessing restricted access
auctions

In addition, restricted auctions are excluded from the
Featured pages. So if you are a seller using this format,
your listing will be harder to find.

Even though they are less well known, these three formats
for auctions on eBay still account for tens of millions of
dollars in sales each year. If they suit your business
model, you might consider them.

When selling a product online, sometimes as a seller we forget to take into account all the additional fees that go along with selling.

As a seller we have all the added conveniences from accepting credit cards through Paypal and other services and the old-fashioned way of waiting for money orders and checks to arrive in the mail.

We have to take into account the fees and costs of those little extras that we have to assist us in our online selling.

Also, if you are using an online management program consider any costs that they may charge to use their services.

Consider that you are selling your grandma's vintage doilies, and you would like to get $15.00 for them, you list your item on eBay. Realizing that when you list them on eBay, your listing fee is $0.30. If you used any other services like buy it now that's another $.05. If you add your item to eBay's gallery to showcase a photo of the item it's another $.25. Just from listing the auction, you are down to $14.40 as your profit. Those fees are charged whether the item is sold or not.

You received one bid of $15.00 on your item. Your final value auction fee that eBay charges you is $0.79. Your profit is now $13.61.

If your bidder decides to pay you via Paypal, you are charged another fee. Realize that when you are selling something you have to take in account any additional fees to determine your profit.

When selling online the basic rule is buy low and sell high. Your in this to try and make some additional cash so if something doesn't sell the first time hang onto it and try and sell it again in the future.

7 Simple Steps To Profit Without Your Own Product

Most people do not succeed on the internet because they are selling products no one desperately wants.

If you want to be truly successful sell only things that people really really really want to buy!

Sounds simple? It is.

You only need to find out what people desperately want and then give it to them.

1. Go to Ebay's 'Hot Item Forum' and find out what products and services are selling well.

5. Arrange shipping with the company. Ask them to dropship the products to the people who have purchased from you on Ebay. (If they won't do this get them to ship pallets of the product to you for you to do the shipping.)

6. Get them to provide you with a complete list of their in-stock inventory. You'll then be in a position to offer related products to any ebay customers who purchase from you as extra backend sales. Just make sure you agree a good profit percentage on each backend product with the company.

7. Advertise the products on Ebay and rake in the cash. If you are a complete Ebay newbie or you have very limited time, go to the 'Easy Trading Assistant' homepage to do the selling for you if necessary.

This is a proven, simple, elegant formula for anybody with a few spare hours a month to make good profits online. It requires zero technical knowledge and even a complete newbie can get started immediately.

I've written a lot about drop shipping. So, I wanted to mix it up a little bit and just point out some stuff about bass fishing.

Bass fishing has a fascinating history. It started in the late 18th century and continues to progress until today. It probably was originally practiced in search for food among the people in the south of the United States. Since then, it has started gaining numerous audiences of all ages and nations. Today, countries such as Australia, Cuba, South Africa, United States and most of Europe participate in this kind of event.


  • The year 1768 or 1770 represents the birth of bass fishing sports. Onesimus Ustonson introduced his first multiplying reels to the fishing gurus and lovers. It was later developed into bait caster.
  • William Shakespeare Jr. materializes the production of a level wind device and secured its patent on 1897.
  • The William J. Jamison Co introduced the overly ornamented Shannon Twin Spinner in 1915 and was improved to create today’s spinner baits.
  • In 1932, President Franklin D. Roosevelt instituted the creation of Tennessee Valley Authority and encouraged the creation and building of numerous dams. These dams were later used for culturing different varieties of bass fishes.
  • Five years later, DuPont Company filed patent for nylon fishing net, this was later developed into nylon monofilament fishing line.
  • The year 1992 is one of the most glorious events in the history of bass fishing. Larry Nixon, the famous fisherman in the history of bass fishing won $1 M total earnings for this sport on this year. Bass Fish Several fish species that are being caught in the bass fishing events are the following:
  • Micropterus salmoides (Lacepede) - Largemouth Bass• Micropterus dolomieui - Smallmouth bass
  • Micropterus punctatus - Kentucky Bass

Other species of Micropterus are also caught but one that remains popular is the Largemouth bass. However, it should be emphasized that Australian Bass are different from the above North American Bass variants although most share similar features.

Perhaps, the most robust success of Bass Fishing was in the 1950s. The popularity of the game during this period is the springboard to the development of modern fishing equipments from bass boats, rods, lines, lures and various fishing gears.

Electronic gears were also incorporated among the host of equipments bass fishers used at that time. Reels of different types, which function in hauling and hoisting, were also created.
The contribution of bass fishing industry to the US economy records $50 to $70 Billion and the number continues to grow. Statistics show that the audience base of this sport is increasing and that more and more people are getting interested in it compared to tennis and golf.

Monitor Your Search Engine Rankings

Once you have been indexed by search engines periodically check up on your blog’s rankings within its niche. You do this of course by searching on the key phrase you used for optimization.

If you picked a penetrable niche, you should be able to get onto the first page (at least on Yahoo) within a month, but if not, you will need to:

Search out link partners in your niche and setup reciprocal links. Simply find high-ranking websites in your niche on Google and Yahoo and offer to exchange links with them.

Deployment Guide for Military

As you know, deployment is a fact of life in the military. The best time to prepare for deployment is long before you receive your orders. Once you receive your orders, you may not have time to do much more than pack and go. It makes sense to make arrangements for your financial affairs ahead of time.

Since you are responsible for your household bills while you are deployed, you should make arrangements to appoint your spouse with a Power of Attorney so he/she can handle your finances while you are deployed. (A Power of Attorney is a legal designation where you grant another the authority to execute documents in your absence).

  • Review your financial arrangements, and if necessary, make sure all financial accounts are shared with your spouse.

  • Record financial account numbers and bring that record with you when you deploy.

  • Review your financial needs now and make arrangements for any loans that may be needed.

  • Set up automatic deposit and payment options. and set up as many of your bills in advance as possible.

  • Make a budget for home and deployment expenses.

  • Review budgets, expenses, and financial arrangements with your spouse so that your finances can be handled in your absence.


Suggested Guidelines for Deployment Budgets:

  1. Review past expenses to estimate expenses during deployment.

  2. Consider any changes in your income, spending, and savings that will be caused by the deployment.

  3. Set realistic spending and savings goals that will allow you to balance your income and expenses during deployment.

  4. Consider opening a special savings account to cover any unforeseen expenses during deployment.

  5. Decide how your credit cards (if any) will be used during deployment. Decide who
    will use them, how they will be used and how much the spending limit will be.

  6. Create a household budget with your spouse, so that financial affairs can be taken care of in your absence.

You can also set up automatic transfers with many merchants, such as your utility providers. This way, funds are automatically deducted from your accounts when the payment is due. Direct deposit is the fastest and most convenient way to receive pay while you are deployed. With direct deposit, your pay is automatically credited to your account . If you have access to the Internet while you are away, you can keep up with your accounts through your free Internet home banking service.


If your accounts are in your name only, your spouse’s name only, or just the name of whoever is handling your accounts, you may have difficulty dealing with financial issues that arise in your absence.You may want to consider putting all of your accounts in two names, either you and your spouse or a trusted friend or family member.

All about School Life & Growing Up.

In life it’s hard to narrow down what you want to be when you grow up. I am now some what grown and I still don’t know what I want to be. A potato farmer wouldn’t be too shabby but I have to put food on the table for my rug rats. So education is the direction I am striving for.

I’ve conquered a few things in the last decade or so. I am a teen father, who has conquered marriage to a point. I have joined the Air Force and have done well for myself with professional development and leadership. I have lost everything in a little hurricane call “Katrina” So far so good right?

From here on out maybe I will start to run into the finer things of life. To cross paths with success I will need to acquire knowledge and as much knowledge I can handle. Now that I have my four year degree under my belt I can move forward and obtain an MBA. This is one of my first goals. An MBA will open another door to success and provide me with more choices. That’s why America is so great because we can choose to achieve and conquer or choose to do nothing and ride the wave of life. Either way the choice is ours.

If I could forecast the next 5 years or so I would portray myself as an Entrepreneur running my own business. Doing what I love most is the Ultimate goal. If in my life time I can have the opportunity to do what I love for a living then I will have met my Professional Goal. Running a business and loving every second of it. I would have ownership and created something that I can call mine. That’s what it boils down to, at least in this crazy society I live in called USA.

Doba Review & Free Trial Huge Profits!

Doba is on the rampage spiking thier product inventory to over 1 Million products. What does that mean for you? This is one of my favorites. Many times huge storage units full of abandoned merchandise can be purchased for as little as a couple hundred dollars! These sales are not highly published and finding out about them can take a little leg work. I recommend using your yellow pages and calling all the top storage facilities in your area to find out what their seized property sale procedures are. The leg work could pay off nicely. I know it does for me!

There is in level 5 a secret cave at the button of the map entrance. It comes out
on the side where they are not expecting a side attack from that side and it shall
be easier.
Get New Ending Sequence:
Finish the game using legendary difficulty setting in Campaign Mode
Carry 3 Weapons:
OK to carry 3 weapons u have to beat the game (i beat it on easy) then when ur
done u can carry 3 weapons
Battling flood:
Using a combination of assault, Shotgun, and grenades works best...
Warning: Only use the [sticky] grenades at a far distance, especially for the little
ones.
Shot gun- use on big floods, and little floods.
When those little guys, that jump up at you, are all grouped together use the
shot gun, it shoots out a lot of bullets at a time (you can see this if you shoot at a
smooth wall, or the ground...you can see all the marks it makes).
Also close to medium range range to the big guys.
Use Assault rifle if the guy is standing still, if he or you are moving too much it
screws your aim very badly and you waste bullets and have to re load more often
and then they have a clear shot.
For the grenades use them when you know something is behind a wall, or when
you see a lot of flood coming at you from a safe distance.
for sticky grenades you MUST ALWAYS REMEMBER to use them at a safe distance
because if you shoot it on one of those little guys that follow you you will get hurt
bad too because of the blast that they brought with them, same with the big
guys; I have learned this because the the Master Chief doesn't run to fast so he
cant out run a lot of the flood.
Don't use your grenades all at once..They are to important, and sometimes rarest
when you need them.
Battling the flood 2:
When you fight the flood it is best to use a combo of the Assault Rifle (For the
little dudes) And the Shotgun (For the big ones).
When the flood that look like humans come at you try to aim for their big arm.
they will die instantly if you shoot it off. it is best to do this at close to medium
range with the shotgun. but if you have to you can also use the Assault Rifle.
If you use Grenades try not to use the Plasma Grenades. try to use the
Fragmentation grenades because if the flood run at you with the sticky grenade
on them you are in trouble.
Also in order to get more check points try to kill all enemies in the area and the
comp will generally give you a check point.

Against the big flood just put a shotgun to their chest a pull the trigger it works
best that way.
Bloody Warthog:
To start things off lets just beat the game first!Now since the game is beat you
should have a little fun.Now go to any level that lets you use the warthog.Now for
the good part.When you see an enemy run over him.But it isn't that simple!If
your enemy jumps out of the way do a donut and you should get him!Another
cool thing is to take a rocket launcher and blast the warthog towards them and it
might hit them and they will die!Now I have a great recipe for chicken noodle
sallad,just kidding!

Silent Level Shortcut:
This will help if your annoyed by always having to go back because the yellow
dude locks the door. First find a warthhog and get some people inside. Go where
the place where there are lots of guys and where kortana says the covenant are
putting up a real fight. Go down completely with your warthhog and go at full
speed directly where the yellow dude is. If you did it right then your warthhog will
be half way through. Press forward and get out. Then pass the level like you
usually do and come back where the warthog is stuck. You may think it is
impossible to get out but just press back and then get out. You will be in back of
it and now you're done the hard part!
Master sniping technique:
Heres a cheap sniping tactic to aggravate your friends with next time your in a
deathmatch.
turn on all vehicles, weapons on normal, and play on the sidewinder level.
grab a sniper rifle and a tank, drive it up to the outer cliff on the blue light side
where the rocket launcher is located, drive the tank around the cliff past the
rocket launcher towards the outside of the portal.
now back it up the hill next to the portals outside door, the tank should be facing
straight at the tree out in the middle of the level.
soon as it's been back up that it cant go any farther (enough that you could get
under it) go get a ghost and go off the tank like a ramp.
this is a very stressing trick, it will take a while but you'll know you have gotten in
the sniping spot when you fly off the tank out beyond the boundaries of the level.
now you can walk around the whole level and pop out whenever you want and
snipe your friends and then pop back out so they cant hit you. (it looks like your
flying and sometimes you can keep the ghost up there.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?
If you are about to quit, do you know what to do to fight off that urge to smoke another cigarette?

Cigarrest to Stop Smoking in 7 Days!


EVALUATION
A high ranking in one or both the questions in group one (1) indicates that you use cigarettes for stimulation or extra energy. You might smoke to help to stay awake or for a boost of energy to complete a task. You may use them when your body says it needs rest, but you have work to accomplish.

A high rating in group two (2) indicates that you use smoking to help you to relax, whether it is physical, mental, or both. You may use cigarettes during breaks at work, after you have completed a difficult job, or when you have that cup of coffee or alcoholic beverage.

High scores in group three (3) indicates that you use smoking to deal with negative effects in your life. Smoking gives you a lift when you become angry, depressed, tense or anxious.

The questions in group four (4) reflect your psychological dependencies. You are concerned that you will run out of cigarettes before it happens and way before you have any nicotine deprivation.

Group five (5) suggests that you have a chemical dependency. If each of your answers was high in this group, it means that without an occasional smoke, you begin to experience withdrawal symptoms and occasionally fell a little uncomfortable.
Group six (6) tells us that you use smoking to have something to do with your hands when you are nervous or uncomfortable, maybe in social situations, or something to do when you are bored.

The different categories of questions in the quiz give a great variety of reasons why people with different needs smoke. Nicotine is an extremely powerful drug! It is more addictive than heroin or cocaine. If you read the papers you know cigarette manufacturers manipulate the amount of nicotine in their cigarettes to provide a consistent flavor and also to insure that you get the same dose with each cigarette you light up.

KNOW THE ENEMY

What makes smoking so habit forming ?
Even if you only smoke a few cigarettes a day, why do you feel so bad when you try to quit?

Nicotine creates a biochemical reaction in your body that has an immediate effect on your mood, your ability to reason, and your metabolism. The more that you smoke, the higher level of chemical dependency will be reached. Light smokers can also become just as dependent on cigarettes because of nicotine’s psychological impact. In this way it can affect moods and feelings in certain situations.

THE EFFECTS OF NICOTINE

It is only a matter of seconds after that first puff that nicotine starts to have an effect on your central nervous system, and the rest of your body. Certain areas of the brain, when stimulated by nicotine, help you think more clearly. Other areas of the brain lie in a pleasure center which when stimulated, can make you feel more relaxed and less anxious.

Nicotine also affects the hormones produced by the body which creates a chemical dependency to nicotine and the accompanying craving. Heavy smokers have become dependent on heightened levels of hormones, stimulated by nicotine, which can have an addictive quality. They need a cigarette at certain intervals of time. After the stimulation of the hormones starts to fall, they need another cigarette to bring them back into the comfort zone. If they do not get that cigarette, the craving begins.

HOW YOU CAN BEGIN TO QUIT

Many people have found that including physical activity in their program to quit smoking has added a tremendous benefit to assist in quitting. There are many reasons for this:
When people are more active, they gain confidence and like themselves more. They feel more energy, and are more capable of dealing with tension in their lives. With increased activity, the smell of tobacco actually becomes offensive. Whenever you feel the need to smoke after you have decided to quit, get up and move around instead. A brief physical activity can provide you with the lift that you may have received from nicotine.

HOW TO QUIT IN SEVEN DAYS
You are now ready to consider the following question:
How and when do you want to quit smoking?
There are only two ways to effectively quit smoking, immediately (cold turkey), or gradually. When you quit gradually, you use various methods to taper off before you have that last cigarette. Neither way is better than the other for all people. Pick the one that you feel fits your temperament. Either way, a nicotine patch may prove to be a real benefit in giving up, especially if you are a heavy smoker.

Try this test to see which way is better for you.

If your answer to all of the above questions is yes, you may be a candidate to quit immediately. But before you do, read on to get the tools necessary to be successful. After reading the following, set a time to quit. If not right now, then tomorrow, but do it.

What about the doubts you may be feeling now?

Most smokers will get a sense of doubt when they read the questions above. You probably are not confident in your ability to follow through with resisting any future craving to smoke, or finding something to substitute for the feelings that smoking has given to you.
In order to have the confidence to quit, you :
(1) must find an alternative to handle the urge to smoke, when it hits, and
(2) create ways to deal with the reasons that you smoked in the first place.
Together we will accomplish both these tasks so that when the day comes that you had planned to quit, you will be confident to do it.

HOW TO HANDLE THE URGE

Your artillery. There are several weapons that you can use in your fight to quit.
EACH OF THESE WEAPONS WORK- THEY HAVE BEEN PROVEN
You may use one, all, or a combination of several to achieve your goal. The urge to smoke is immediate, and usually lasts for five minutes. If you can resist for that period of time, you reduce the urge.
1. Take a deep breath, hold it for a few seconds, and exhale as if you had just taken your first puff on a cigarette. Part of the feeling you get from smoking is a direct result of taking a deep breath. A deep breath allows you to take in a maximum amount of oxygen, and exhaling lets out large quantities of carbon dioxide. This results in a feeling of relaxation. Try it, you’ll see.
2. Take a sip of water several times during this five minute period. It can help to diminish the need to smoke, and gives you something to do with your hands. The extra water will also help to flush the nicotine out of your body.
3. Put something in your mouth that has no calories, such as a stirrer, toothpick, or another substitute for a cigarette.
4. Get busy with something, anything, to keep you busy for the next five minutes.
5. As long as it does not lead to a craving, chew a piece of gum or a piece of hard candy. Life Savers work well.
6. Get up and move around for five minutes. It will help the urge to smoke to pass.
7. Use a nicotine patch as replacement therapy.


HANDLING THE REASONS FOR SMOKING
Become a high energy person without cigarettes.
Relax and enjoy the pleasure of relaxation without cigarettes.
Deal with your tensions without a cigarette.
Deal with psychological dependence.
Deal with chemical dependency on nicotine.
Keep your hands busy fighting boredom.

LET’S START TO QUIT RIGHT NOW

The first thing to do is set a date when you are going to quit smoking. Let’s start one week from today. That will give you plenty of time to practice with the weapons in your arsenal. Eight days from today, it will be the beginning of the end of your smoking habit.
Days 1 and 2

Examine your smoking behavior for the first two days. Every time you light up, ask yourself:
1. Why am I smoking this cigarette?
2. Would this be an easy one or a difficult one to do without?
3. If I did not smoke this cigarette, what would I do instead?
Day 3
Let’s get out and test your weapons today.
At least once today, use your weapons to shoot down the urge to smoke.
During the five minutes that it will take for the urge to pass, try out some of your arsenal. Try one, or all, or find a combination that works for you.

Day 4

Today is the big testing day. If you haven’t already tried it, skip those one or two cigarettes that you feel may be the toughest to give up in your daily routine. Pick the ones that you rated “difficult” during your monitoring period.
Remember, this is a practice period, and you must not get upset if you are unable to give up a difficult cigarette. You must practice and experiment with your different weapons to realize how you can be more effective.
If you found skipping that cigarette very difficult or even failed in the end, review any factor that got in the way of your success. The most common causes of difficulty or failure that a potential quitter faces are:
Chemical properties of addiction
When you do not have that cigarette, you feel lousy. If you are a heavy smoker, a nicotine patch may help to relieve your bad feelings.
Social pressures
You may find yourself in a situation (card game, party, coffee break) during which you would normally smoke. It may help to let others know of your desire to quit, and also your reasons for quitting. Enlisting the aid of a non smoker to confide in may also help. Make sure that he or she is aware of your goals so that they do not say or do anything to instill a negative impact on your desire to quit.
If you feel that you may not resist the social pressures of smoking, consider the option of giving up these social encounters for two or three weeks until the urge passes and you can be comfortable again.
Tension and negative emotion
A crisis occurs during your work or personal day, and one of the main reasons for you to smoke has been tension reduction. Try to deal with your negative emotions and use the tension reducing methods that we talked about earlier. Get away from the area that the tension is associated with. Take a walk, or go to another room. You may also find that nicotine gum will give you enough tension relief to get through.

Days 5, 6, and 7.

You are now heading down the home stretch. In the next three days, your goal is to come out of this week smoking half the cigarettes that you would normally smoke. If you started as a one pack a day smoker, cut back to ten cigarettes per day, or less. The fewer the better. During days 5 and 6, set your goals toward achieving positive results on day 7. Maintain your smoking record during these three days, and continue to decrease your dependency on nicotine.

What do you do if you still have doubts? This is probably due to your chemical dependency on nicotine. It is a highly powerful drug, and many factors have been working together to make you dependent. Discuss with your doctor about the feasibility of a patch or nicotine gum. Nicotine is the hook that has gotten you to smoke which carries the harmful effects to your body. With the help from the patch or the gum, you will have all he tools you need to successfully quit. The patch or gum will give you a steady influx of nicotine into your system, which will be reduced slowly over a period of several weeks. DO NOT SMOKE WHILE ON THE PATCH. You could experience a dangerous overdose of nicotine.

NOTE; Pregnant women should not use the gum or patch. Smokers with any form of heart disease should consult with a physician before using.

SOME ADVICE FOR THE DAY THAT YOU QUIT SMOKING

If you are not completely confident that you can resist the urge to smoke after you have quit, it may be necessary to remove any visual reminders of smoking from your living and work areas. Throw away or give away those leftover cigarettes, get rid of lighters, ashtrays, matches, and anything else that could be associated with smoking. Why should you force yourself to resist the urge to smoke when it is far simpler to just remove the reminders. If you keep a pack of cigarettes in your home or office, there is a good chance that you may pick one up. Just this one may be the cigarette that hooks you again.

COPING WITH THE SYMPTOMS OF WITHDRAWAL

Dizziness may occur during the first one or two days. Take a quick break, it will pass.

Headaches may appear at any time during the first weeks. Try to relax. Take any usual remedy for headache, a cold cloth on the back of your neck, or relieve the stress by taking a short walk.

Tiredness may occur during the first few weeks, but if you meditate or relax during the first few weeks, it will pass.

Coughing may actually increase during the first few days, simply because the residue from the smoke has not been flushed from your system.
Tightness in the chest may occur in the first few days. Rest and take deep breaths, it will go away.

Sleeping problems may occur in the first few days. Try to stay away from drinks that have a high caffeine content, try not to exercise too strenuously in the hours prior to bedtime. A hot bath prior to retiring at night may also be helpful.
Constipation may occur in the first month after you quit. If this occurs, eat foods with a high fiber content, drink plenty of fluids, and do some light exercise.

Concentration may tend to wander during the first few weeks. Be ready for this, take a break or do something physical for a short period of time.

Whatever you attempt has to be marketable in order to make a profit. You perform by providing entertainment, and in exchange receive money for your services. If you can do this on a regular basis, you can become successful. If you are unable for one reason or another, you will not.


Your market will include, but not be limited to a person, group of people, or organization that requires a specific service, for example music. Marketing that product means simply preparing your product (music) and making it available to the consumer. A rock and roll club needs rock bands, Branson, Mo., needs country and easy listening, and Las Vegas needs production numbers with style.


The person going to a concert wants to be entertained, the bar owner wants a high gate as his cover charge helps to pay you, and the bride wants her wedding to be a hit and also memorable.


If you can follow these simple principles when you are out trying to book appearances for your musical enterprises, you will find work. The degree with which you accomplish these goals will determine whether you can make a lot of money or not. Just make sure that you are willing to do what it takes to be a success. Regardless of your personal style, competition, musical ability, tenacity, or your overall business sense, you can make it - or not. The only way to fail is to quit or never try at all.



GETTING STARTED


What do we do now?


You are looking to play music, have fun doing it, and maybe even make some money at the same time. There are a lot of different types of bookings available and we will explore the options. Information will be a key factor in helping you to make the choices between the options that present themselves.


Some of the elements that could affect a decision are:


Am I good enough to do this for a living?


Can I read music?


What should I charge for my performance?


Where do I find work?


Is singing important to making money?


Should I hook up with an established group?


Do I start my own?


How do I make a steady living?


How do I locate others to play with?


How do we fine tune our musical performances to benefit us financially?


After careful consideration of these questions, you should have a clear understanding of where you would like to go and how to begin to achieve it.


Most people like to listen to music that they already are familiar with and supplying them with their preferences is the key to making a living playing music. Stick with the stock tunes for now, as they may be familiar to your audience. Use them to warm up, expand your list of tunes, increase your versatility, and become familiar with the other musicians that you either work with or come in contact with.


If you decide to work in some original tunes later on there are a few things to remember. You can make a living as a musician playing stock tunes and work in some of your original materials into your performance, work during the day to support yourself so that you can try out your original works, or have someone support you until you make it working on your originals. In any case, do your best to have fun in whatever you do.


FREELANCING


In general, a freelance musician is one who is not working for any one particular place of employment and is usually not restricted to an individual job. Work when you want, where and as often as you wish. Generally, you’ll be responsible for your own taxes, like any other self-employed person. To freelance, you should have a higher skill level and that may be developed by playing with groups, school bands, and other musical ensembles. During this time, the talents necessary to make it in the business can be developed, songs can be learned, and getting used to working with others will give you a lift up along the ladder to success. This is the period of time necessary to learn the tunes that other successful groups are playing.


Where are the jobs and who is going to be there?


You can find a place to work anywhere that people get together. It could be a social event, a party, or someone’s home. If there is a floor there, musicians can set up to play. The possible places for engagements is limited only by your imagination. You can get a booking on a ship, in a shopping mall, at a club, church, shopping center, parking lots, on a bus, department stores, offices, at the beach, sports stadiums, trade shows, virtually anywhere people congregate or listen to music.


One very important aspect of making money in this business is to try to book gigs yourself, or have one member of your group appointed to get the word out and handle all aspects of the bookings.


Types of bookings and the right music


Restaurants, clubs, hotels - Generally, you should see what type of atmosphere that particular establishment is trying to specialize in and play accordingly. If you are with a country band it would not make sense to book in a rock and roll club, and vice versa.


County fairs, fund-raisers, and amusement oriented gatherings - There are many opportunities for a varied source of musical expression. The larger amusement parks hire full time musicians to entertain the day to day crowds, and those groups may specialize in classical, country, rhythm and blues, or big band era music. All you have to do is call them, see who hires the various groups, and arrange for an audition.


Rehearsals and showcases - There are many people in the business that put on a number of productions during the course of the year. These may include dance recitals, musical extravaganzas, plays, or any of hundreds of other possibilities. Each of these may be an opportunity to find work. Weddings - Several types of music may be used at a wedding. Among them are background music before the wedding reception, processional and recessional music, dinner music, dance music, and ethnic specialties.


Schools - Music schools, colleges, recording schools, private music schools, and audio and video schools may need some background melody to help to convey a certain idea, image, or effect. These jobs will normally require that you can read music on sight.


Private parties - These types of bookings can be very broad based, from a cruise on a private yacht to a six year olds birthday party, a store’s grand opening, or a trade or fashion show.



Ethnic oriented - Party music for a specific segment of the population may require some extra diversification into other areas of music that you may not be called on to perform often. If you are at a Hispanic wedding, you may need to play some Latin American songs as well as the traditional ones in your repertoire. If your group can be versatile, it can only help you to book more jobs in the future.


Churches and Temples - In general, each will employ a director of music whose responsibility will include acquiring an organist, soloist or other type of musician such as a keyboard artist in order to facilitate the proper completion of services or social gatherings. These bookings usually result in long term employment.


Freelancing - Many opportunities are available to the group or individual that can be versatile and has a higher level of expertise in playing his instrument. Not everyone can play at the same level so they cannot possibly do the same kind of work. In addition to the bookings mentioned earlier, there are a myriad of other opportunities including; Sporting Events, Rodeos, Ballet, Beauty Pageants, Theater, Political Rallies, Comedies, and even TV and Radio. Lately, the Internet has come into play with musical opportunities to showcase your talents and test market new arrangements and material.


In order to keep yourself working and earning as much as possible, it will be necessary to become as versatile as possible and know many differing types of music.


MAKING A LIVING


In order to make a living on a regular basis, you will need to:


Play well. The better you are at your respective instrument, the more demand there will be for your services, and the more opportunities will present themselves.


Read well. The better that you can read music, the more bookings will be available to you. This is virtually a mandatory requirement for the higher paying professional gigs.


Have an extensive song list in the style that you play.


If you can sing, the more tunes that you can accompany vocally, the better. If two equal musicians audition for the same gig, the one that can sing the lead in more of them will usually get the booking.


Play by ear. If you have this ability also, it will increase the amount of work you can get.


Sound good. Make sure that your equipment is set for the appropriate volume levels and is properly tuned.


Be punctual On time and dressed for the gig.


Be polite. The more people that like you at the booking, the more chances you will get another by referral.


Be prepared. Know what will be expected of you and provide it.


Enjoy yourself. The more that you enjoy what you are doing, the more others will enjoy you. This leads to more work.


Be a team player. You are there for the enjoyment of the audience, not yourself. Work together to make the magic work, and convey that to the audience.


DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS


With the diversification of instruments and musical styles, it stands to reason that there are an equally diverse amount of possible gigs. Some of the more basic ones will be covered here but do not limit your horizons by not trying out other avenues that may present themselves. The author will mention several types of instruments in the pages that follow. If any are unfamiliar to you, may I suggest a trip to your local library where taped samples of the various styles and sounds may be observed.


Keyboard - This is probably one of the most versatile instruments around, since it will fit in to most musical styles and arrangements.


Solos: small parties, cocktail lounges, waiting areas, restaurants, receptions, churches, studio recording, classical, ragtime, jazz, airports, backup for singers.


Duos: Accompanist for another instrument or a group of singers in any style.


Trios or larger: Can play along with any group that utilizes key type instruments or synthesizers.


Synthesizers: It is not uncommon to have two keyboard artists playing in the same group. While one plays piano, the other may simulate a variety of other woodwinds, brass, flute, stringed instruments or special sound effects. Most times the player will be coordinating the arrangements as the group is playing, all without the use of a musical chart. Keyboard players are the most versatile musicians in the industry, so they have a lot more opportunities to work and are a valuable source of referrals and recommendations for bookings.


Guitar - Another of the more requested and versatile instruments that can play so many types and styles of music. Most commonly used in restaurants, cocktail lounges, parties, one-man-shows, and any type of show where the guitarist also is required to sing, such as a coffee shop. Sometimes they may have an electronic drummer and possibly bass pedals for rhythm. Happy hour gigs will sometimes use a guitarist, but more commonly it is a keyboard artist.


Duos: Two guitarists accompanying each other on pop tunes, playing for vocalists and other types of instruments, in clubs, restaurants, and the occasional casual get together.


Trios and larger: Can play along with any group that uses a guitar.


Bass. The bass player has several opportunities available to him for performing. The field of classical music, concerts, jazz, and in combos with piano and guitar or brass.


Solo performances are extremely rare unless the level of performance is extremely high.


Duos: Bass and piano are the most common combination performing classical, jazz, and miscellaneous styles. Guitar and bass work well in coffee houses.


Trios and larger: Primarily the major working combinations are bass/piano/drums and bass/piano/guitar. In general, any style of music that uses bass will have a bass.


Drums. Rhythm is the basis of all music, and a good drummer should be able to handle many styles and variations of them. Drummers work in small combos as well as the larger bands and symphony orchestras. The more successful players are also able to sing lead and the drummer who plays well and sings will more often than not get the gig before the non-singer will.


Hand held percussion: This type of instrument includes tambourine, cowbell, shakers, and the like. Latin music depends on these types of rhythm even more than a traditional drummer.


Strings: The stringed instruments have been primarily used in the classical format for hundreds of years, but the natural evolution of music has led to more diverse uses for violin, viola, and cello. Nowadays it is not uncommon to see one of these specialty acts perform at a wedding, in a shopping mall, or a private party The three types of stringed instruments have made great advances in the jazz, rock, and pop music categories. Most trio and larger groups are handled by a booking agency that specializes in this type of music.


Woodwinds. These would include clarinet and sax, flute, piccolo, oboe, English horn, bassoon, and their like. Generally, the type of work involved can include symphony orchestras, studio work, jazz ensembles and large show acts. The musicians who can "double", that is , play more than one instrument will naturally be in greater demand and usually work more than one who plays an instrument exclusively.


Brass. Players in this category include ones well versed in trumpet, cornet, tuba, horn, trombone and the like. The normal types of work available may include Dixieland, jazz symphony, big band, theater acts and orchestra, and even the player that announces the parade of horses at the racetrack. Most of your gigs will come from referrals from bandleaders, agents, or contractor calls. Another way to break into the business is to get referrals from your instructor.


Vocalists. In general, the vocalist should be able to perform many types of music variations just to be versatile enough to continue to work. When filling in at a gig, it may be beneficial to bring arrangements of songs that you perform well, and any styles that you are comfortable with. Vocalists do whatever work they are trained to do, and can do it a professional level.



OTHER SOURCES OF INCOME


Musicians have many opportunities to increase their incomes and the purpose of this section is to give an overview of those areas. Many of the following are careers in themselves, but the option is there if you choose to pursue it.


Teaching. A music instructor should be not only a good teacher, but a good musician as well. It is far better to learn your trade from someone that is excellent at what they do, verses someone who is merely adequate. If the instructor can actually show the student what he is trying to teach, he cannot possibly drift too far away from the matter at hand. A good musical education should consist of rhythm training, ear training, application, and theory. Lessons should be tailored to an individual’s goals so that he may understand what is being taught and also to apply it. You can acquire students through advertising, from your audience, referrals from people you have entertained, or music stores that take on students and need instructors.


Takedowns. A takedown is when you listen to the music and write it down. There are times when a singer or songwriter need someone trained to write charts for them. Charts are necessary for singers to bring to their engagements so that the musicians can provide the proper musical accompaniment, writers need charts to publish and copyright their material.


Arranging. Basically this means to take a composition and write it for a particular mood of music, group of instruments, or add and delete one or more instruments to dramatically change the basic context of the piece. A Broadway show, for example may need a melody to be more upbeat and timely to create a desired effect. If you have the ability to read and play music well, you may be able to pick up some good extra income by arranging for other performers.


Jingles. Someone has to write those songs that you hear on television programs and commercials. They’re called jingles. Generally, it is used as an aid to assist people in remembering a product through association. If the jingle is memorable, listeners will remember it and occasionally sing or hum it to themselves or others, thus increasing the coverage and scope of the original advertising effort. To get started writing jingles, call some ad agencies and find


out how to get started. If you’d like to be a studio musician to play these jingles, you will have to contact the ad agencies, composers, and other musicians to get a referral or an opportunity.


Composing. Similar to arranging, the composer has the ability to take an idea and create a song, album, or background music for a TV program or movie, or even a live play. In order top get steady work in this field, it will be necessary to acquaint yourself with record producers as they are generally the ones who hire the composer.


Songwriter. Writing can be an extremely rewarding aspect of the music industry simply because of the money that can be earned. It can also be very fulfilling to take an idea or concept from its inception to completion and see and hear your creation played over and over again.


Sidelining. Do you ever remember seeing a band or group of musicians playing in a TV show or a movie? That music was recorded in a studio and the musicians on screen are only going through the motions, appearing to play the music as you hear it. In essence, they were "lip-synching" their parts. These types of jobs are usually booked by an agency that will go through their files and select musicians that play the requested instruments. All you need to do is to show up with your instrument, dress the part (sometimes a tuxedo is required) and appear to be playing. Your level of expertise is not really important as long as you can look like you are playing.


Voice-overs. Sometimes a celebrity will be expected to sing a song on TV or in a movie and a well trained singer will be required to insert their possibly more pleasant voice for the original recording. This can be an exceptionally demanding field as you should be able to coordinate each note sung with the movements of the person that you are dubbing. In addition, there are voice overs, cartoon, and narratives for documentaries.



MAKING A PROMO KIT


The main reason to assemble a promo kit is to give the impression that you are able to handle the types of gigs that you say you can. There are several different types of promotional needs which will vary from group to group, or different aspects of the business. In many instances you may only need to supply a demo tape, while in others a live audition will be required. In those instances, a full promo kit will probably not be necessary.


In some of the larger metropolitan areas it may be necessary to supply a video of your group, since agents do not have the time to go to see all the various people performing in their area. The video will allow them to review your work and keep it on hand as a reference whenever they need it. Some clients want to see as many bands as they can, but don’t have the time to go out to see them. Naturally, they want to hire the best available at the time, and the video gives them the chance to see many groups in a much shorter period of time.


Many of the people that are planning a large affair will want to get their money’s worth and will spend a long time selecting the right group.


If you do not have a complete promo kit do not let that stop you from continuing to promote yourself. Realize that you absolutely must have one, and take any measures that you can to assemble one. If a potential client asks for a picture and a song list, provide one. If not, chances are that you will not get the job. Obviously they want to be assured that you can deliver what you say you can before they have to shell out any money for a contract.


Your promo kit should at least contain the following:


a cover letter, a demo tape, a picture of your group, a song list, and information as to how you can be contacted.


Later on you should also include:



a band biography, a listing of previous work as a reference, and a video tape of your performance if needed.




Try not to forget to include a cover letter as this adds a little professionalism to how you are judged by the prospective client. This cover letter could also be used as an advertising piece that can be distributed to various agents, recital halls, trade shows, and the like where a full press kit may not be practical. Make sure that you try to include items that will give you credibility and create a demand for the reader to hire you or at the very least, see a full promo kit.


PICTURES


You should have some quality pictures of yourself (if you will work as a single) or your group in order to project the image that you will be presenting. Figure out what part of the market will be your target area and tailor your photos to that segment. If you are looking for the high class higher paying bookings, you should probably be dressed in a tuxedo, semi-formal wear for the ladies, or pant suits. Let your booking agent guide you as to the image that you will present. Most photos are done in black and white simply because it is easier to reprint them. 8x10 shots are standard with the name of the group and phone number along the bottom.


SONG LISTS


This can be accomplished in several ways. Select a listing of songs grouped by category with the original artists name. A complete list also in the same format. A list with just the titles in the same format with only the titles. These may be typed on clean paper with the band name, phone number, a contact name, and the word "song list" across the top.


A freelance individual should have a song list to give to bands and bandleaders when needed.


BUSINESS CARDS


Whenever possible pass out your business card to prospective clients, other musicians, bandleaders, promoters, agent and others associated with the business. Make them available at your gigs for your audience to take. This can be an important source of future business for you.



VIDEOS


You can tape an entire show, a segment of a show, or select parts of certain tunes to create your presentation. The tape will show how well you are able to get people up to dance, how you emcee the affair, and how well you can communicate with your audience during a performance. Just remember to periodically update your tapes if they contain current tunes to keep it timely.


STATIONERY


Your basic needs for stationery should include a letterhead with the band’s name, logo, address and phone numbers, envelopes and the band’s return address. It would be appropriate to have the business cards, letterhead, and envelopes all match. Large envelopes and folders are also necessary to mail out your group photos and press kits.


FINDING WORK


The single most important aspect of making a living as a musician is to be able to find work. Make a plan of all the people that you want to contact and talk to them. Promote your group or your individual talents relentlessly, and after the bookings start to come in, continue to promote. After awhile the bookings will come to you, but you will have to get to that point first. Don’t delay promoting because you are saving up for that more powerful amp, or you are learning the words to 100 additional songs. Start working now and learn as you go.


Managers - These people are the ones who usually run the business part of your group. He would handle the bookings, deal with the agencies, and tries to get you gigs. His primary concern besides the welfare of your group is to help you to generate money. This management person should be out promoting your band, looking for possible gigs, and creating opportunities for you to make money. Normally, managers work for a percentage of the amount of the booking- usually 10 to 15%, but those figures may vary. He should book the gigs, you play them, and if you are good enough get more gigs.



Finding management.


Look in various printed media for assistance in locating a manager. Try the phone book, newspapers, trade papers, and any other sources including other bands for a reference.


Seek out the type of management that handles your kind of group. Get someone familiar with your musical venue and let them use their promotional skills to help to increase your income.


Call them. If you don’t make contact, they will never know that you are looking for help. Tell them what kind of music you play, what type of gigs you’ve had and where you would like to be. Be honest with them. If you are just starting out, tell them. They have to know and they will appreciate your honesty.


Booking yourself.


What is your potential market?


Where are the gigs?


How do you get them?


Market- Make your music fit the market. If there is a demand for rhythm and blues, play that. Rock and roll, do that. Casual mood music or background music sets, play that. Steady work can be found almost anywhere. From an amusement park to a zoo.


Locating gigs. Mail letters, make phone calls, contact booking agents and anyone that you can think of to promote your band. Run ads in newspapers, magazines, trade journals, help out other bands that are overbooked, and in general promote like crazy.


Contact the right people. Make phone calls to everyone that you can think of- supermarket checkout people, doctors, lawyers, everybody. The bookings will come from referrals. The more people that know about your music, the better the chance that you will be referred. Make calls to food and beverage managers at hotels and clubs. Call the social director or booking agent at fraternal organizations. If you have to go through an agent make an appointment to see him. Do whatever it takes.


How much should I charge? A booking will pay what it does. You can take the money and the gig, or you can negotiate for more. If you are just starting out, charge whatever you will be comfortable with. If your group is experienced with many bookings already played, you may want and expect to get a bit more for your time. Charge as much as you can get. For a four hour booking, the least that you should expect to get should be $125 per person. The most important factor to consider pertaining to how much to accept for the gig is: Do you want to do the gig? If money is tight, do the gig. If you are financially comfortable, don’t do it. If the gig sounds like fun, will be a great networking opportunity for future business, do it. Take all factors into consideration when you decide on bookings. Each situation has its own set of variables and you should deal with them on an individual basis.


PLANNING


One of the most important aspects of a successful career in music is planning. Whether it involves starting out in a new career or being established with all the bookings that you can handle, you still need to schedule your gigs, plan to arrive on time, practice, promote, and fulfill your other day to day obligations. With organizations your income can increase dramatically. Write down all your obligations and organize them in a sensible and managed manner. If they are not written down, you may forget them and that could spell disaster if it is a money making opportunity.


Look to the future and determine where you would like to be in six months, one year, and five years from now. Analyze what your current problems are and strive to find a solution. Often the answer to your problems can be quite simple. " I don’t have enough work. Why not?"


Hire an agent, publicize, promote. Talk to people. It can be that simple.


Set your goals and allow a reasonable time to implement them. Without meaningful time restraints, any goal can take forever to accomplish. Break down the steps necessary to achieve your goal, allow an appropriate time period to attain it, and do it.


Time management. Plan how to get it done. If you have too much time on your hands, spend more time promoting. If you are short of time, plan how to ease your schedule. These minor problems are easily corrected.


Implementation. You need to perform your activities as scheduled.


Be organized. Arrange your paperwork, Schedules, contracts, bookings, etc., in a neat manner so that you can find it whenever needed.


Planning Summation.


1. Arrange all of your paperwork and see what needs to be done.


2. List all the things that you need and want to get done in the next week. These items will help to further your career and your general well being.


3. Review your to do list and write down your activities and goals in a time management format. Allow specific times and days to accomplish these tasks.


4. Follow your schedule and get it done.


5. When your tasks are completed at the end of the week, make a new schedule and start all over.


SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE


A successful performance should include at least the following:


1. Investigate what is expected of you by the person in charge during the gig.


2. Work with them before, during, and after to make sure that all goes well.


3. Follow the rules of your contract and those of the room that you are working.


4. Be aware of what you are doing and give them their moneys worth.


5. Maintain good relations with everyone involved.


Some factors to assist in accomplishing these goals would be:


1. Show up dressed appropriately.


2. Be aware of the sound level and adjust it if necessary.


3. Like what you are doing and have fun.


4. Be cordial on and off stage.


5. Time your tunes according to the atmosphere of the party.


Investigate- If you do not ask, you cannot possibly know what is expected of you. There are certain gigs that will go according to a prearranged format and others that will take on a life of their own. Be aware of what is expected so that you won’t be surprised later.


Work with them- Stay in touch with the person in charge, because formats can change at a moments notice. Pay attention to what is happening.


Follow the contract- Know the peculiarities of the room that you are playing. One example may be a gig in a V. F. W. Hall where the members expect the band to play "God Bless America" as the last song of the evening. If you do not know it, you do not get the gig. It can be as simple as that.


Dress right- Make sure that your attire is appropriate for the gig that you are working. If it is semi-formal and a tuxedo is required, get one. If you are in a youth oriented club where ripped clothing is normal, dress accordingly


Volume- If the crowd wants to party give it to them. You make or break the affair because you are the one controlling the emotions of all that are attending. Do what you were hired to do. Work it out prior to the gig. Read the audience and adjust your volume or tempo accordingly.


Fun- Get involved in what you are doing. Be interested enough to do it well, have others enjoy what you are doing, and enjoy it yourself as well. If the band looks like they are having a good time, that effect will carry over to the audience and they will have a good time also.


Manners- A professional musician is someone who is confident in their ability to do what he does, do what is needed, and not get an attitude. Play by the rules of the game. You are there to entertain the audience. Let them know that they are appreciated. Let’s face it, if there was no audience, there would be no work for you. Do not smoke on stage unless it is all right to do so. Find out ahead of time. Pay attention to details. There is always something going on in the room which may require social interplay between the band and the attendees.


Promotions- You should continue to promote your music before, during, and after a gig. This can only result in increased bookings and subsequently increased revenues. Pass out business cards, have demo tapes available, put up a sign if possible. After the gig, talk to some of the people in attendance and get a feeling as to how well the performance went and whether there may be some referrals coming your way.


Handling the audience- Realize your objectives. Know what you are expected to do then just do it. Are you merely supposed to entertain, run the show, or get the people to dance.


Were they entertained, did you run the affair effectively, or did they dance all night?


Read your audience and react accordingly. Make the changes that your audience requests. It can only assist you in putting in a better performance. If all is going well, do not change anything. If you are not getting anywhere with the evening, find something that works and pick up the action.


Emotion- All humans are subjected to a multitude of emotions- some good and some bad. Try to keep your attitude on a level plane for fear of losing your cool by possibly blowing up at a customer. That can be an easy route to unemployment. Keep your act fresh. After you have played the same type of song over and over again for years, it gets more difficult each time to stay focused and perform at a high level. By all means, be what you need to be, what you want to be, and get the job done. When you have the right attitude you have a better chance of acting appropriately in all situations.


One of the most important aspects to remember is knowing when something is wrong and being able to correct it, as well as recognizing that activities are right.



CREATING THE GIG


A good gig does not create itself. It has to be planned, nurtured, and performed with enthusiasm, vitality, and a certain amount of spontaneity in order to inject life into your performance. When you know what is expected of you, you can create the desired effect to handle the task at hand. Only you- the musician- can create the effect. If you are hired to play background music, create that. If up tempo is required, create it. Whenever hired to entertain, do it- create it. Give pleasure and hold the interest of all involved. Find out what works and give all you can. Creating is merely another way for the musician to insure his future success for those that are not will not please their audience. Don’t worry about it, you can make it happen. No excuses. Just do it. Create.


CONCLUSION


Everything is relative as to how successful you can be, or feel that you need to be. Some people regularly make thousands of dollars for a single performance while others struggle to earn a hundred dollars a week. Realize where you fit in and strive to achieve that goal. It is entirely possible that you will need a second job to help to support yourself until you attain the position that you desire.


There is other work out there besides club dates. The consensus seems to be that it is up to someone else to keep you busy with bookings. Not so. You must continue to promote yourself at all times. Your agent will be able to get you some bookings but it is up to you to insure that you have enough work to keep you busy. A club or booking agent may hire you again, but remember that connection was the result of prior promotion by you. Your success or failure is solely your own responsibility- so create the kind of life that you wish to live. A determining factor is deciding what you will do with your life- in your case, music. Have enough respect in your own ability to give conviction to your goals and follow through until they happen. To succeed in this business decide what you are looking for, try to attain it, shrug off the failed attempts, and stick to it. Don’t quit now because there is a lot of money out there and you deserve some of it.


People in the music industry have to be a little more creative in their quest for success. It does not always come overnight. It may be necessary for you to get a part time job to give you the time and money needed to practice those pieces that are missing in your repertoire. Do what you have to do to achieve your dreams and don’t ever lose sight of them. Making music is not just about playing gigs, it’s an incredibly interesting lifestyle.


Success in this field will require steady and gradual growth. Most overnight successes achieved their dreams in ten years or more of good hard work. In reality, the overnight success came as the result of one or more factors of their performance changing, evolving as it were, due to the years of fine tuning their craft. Try not to resist what needs to be done to help your career along. If it has to be done, do it. If it takes longer than you expected, fine. Be concerned only with your final goal and persist until you achieve it. GOOD LUCK!

How to ride The Wave Street Surfing Board. Video Included!

For my birthday my mom sent me a Street Surfing board called "the wave". This thing was pretty hard to get used riding at first. When I started I actually started pushing off with the board heading in the wrong direction. (the board was backwards It actually has a front and back) Innocent mistake right? How to ride "The Wave"



  1. Place dominant foot on the front of the board perpendicular to the direction you are heading. (Goofy or Regular foot to the front)

  2. Use your other leg to push off leading with your dominant foot

  3. Place weak foot on the bag panel of street surfing wave and try to propel in a snake-like manner

  4. Use your front foot to guide and your back foot to propel and accelerate the board.


TIPS



  • Don't be timid. The more momentum you can get then the easier it will be to ride & better balance you will have

  • Slightly bend your knees and keep more weight on the front panel

  • When you get balanced and comfortable then you can start to swivel the front and back panels together moving like a snake

  • I keep my legs/feet stiff and do the hula dance with my hips. It helps grind harder into the pavement and I accelerate faster.

  • Buy Replacement wheels. They will come in handy! I replaced my wheels with pink ones...

I purchased a complete Claw Dragon Powell skateboard. I'm currently working on my new skate video to post on a skateboarding/ surfing contest web site called footycs.com. I'm no where near an expert when it comes to skateboarding. But it's a fun hobby for the summer and I may as well sell some decks, and helmets online along the way right.

Finance your DOBA business 100%

Using personal loans and credit cards to raise money for money-making deals is one way of financing your business 100%.

However, if you apply for a business loan, your bank will normally only be prepared to lend you an amount equal to that which you can put up front yourself.

So, as always, money breeds money. If you have $10,000 to finance your new business, but feel that you would get off to a much better start if you had access to $20,000, borrowing the other $10,000 would not normally be too much of a problem. Because you can borrow smaller sums from different banks, you do not even have to be particularly concerned if you are unable to secure the full sum from one source. Remember though, that if you are applying to a variety of sources, try and get the applications in on the same day. This way, when the lenders do a check on your existing borrowing, there won't be any information which they can obtain to show that you are borrowing anything other than the amount you are applying to them for.

Okay Improve your memory...

INTRODUCTION
Can you remember a dozen instances in which you forgot some thing during the past week?
The answer to that question makes little difference, because you have been forgetting things--little things and big--and if your lapses have been forgotten, so much the worse. But, since you're reading this page right now, it's probable that your forgetfulness has been plaguing you more and more frequently. And you don't know what to do about it. And you're asking me.
And I’m asking you: Have you tried to figure out why you've been forgetting? Have you noticed when you've failed to remember? Have you noticed what things you've forgotten?
Of course you have got a memory, and unless I'm wrong, it's a pretty good one. If you wanted to take the time, you could sit down and rattle off literally thousands upon thousands of facts ...the "seven-times" table, who's president of the United States, your middle name, if you have one, or, if not, that you haven't got a middle name, the formula for baby's breakfast, what causes hiccoughs, how to spell "hiccoughs," how to cure a rasher of bacon or a rash, how to obtain a writ of mandamus, how long it takes to boil an egg or get to Pittsburgh when traffic's with you ... you've got enough facts in your mind to fill a hundred jumbo filing cabinets!
But for all that you still forgot to bring the car in to have the oil changed last week, your telephone bill sat in a drawer and went three weeks overdue, your secretary had to remind you that it was your wife's birthday, you put your report card down somewhere and then completely forgot where it was ... and you're getting pretty discouraged over this whole memory situation.
Remember this: Unless you learn something--really get it into your mind in tile first place--you're not ever going to remember it! Unless you understand something the first time, the odds are that the next time will be just another first time.
Trace the thought back a step further, and consider this: Unless you pay attention, you probably will not learn. And another step--unless you're interested for one reason or another, you won't be paying attention.
So you're not going to remember anything in which you don't take an interest upon first encounter.
Of course it's obvious that you must often rely upon your memory to bring you information about things which don't interest you. If you've been asked by the lady next door to pick up a quart of milk on your way home, maybe you don't care whether she drinks her coffee black or not; suppose you don't like your job, or school, or cleaning the house ... these are responsibilities which you've got to meet. Even if you're not genuinely interested in some things, you've got an interest in them, right?
So: since the best way to remember things is to take an interest in them, and since you've sometimes got to remember things about things in which you're not ordinarily very interested ... what's the answer? Create an interest in them!
--Ah, come on, how do you expect me to get interested in addressing two hundred envelopes, or putting out the garbage, or algebra?
Simpler than you think! Get interested in exercising your
memory muscles! Make your memory your hobby, watch it work, teach it new tricks, carry it around with you and show it off, and pretty soon it'll be taking fine care of itself!
In the following chapters I'm going to suggest a few of the tricks that you can play with your memory, in order that many of the things you've been forgetting will become more fun to remember. At the same time, you'll begin to realize that some things aren't worth the time and effort it would take to commit them to memory, if they can be taken care of in some easier way; part of this book will be devoted to a number of memory-minimizers--suggestions for avoiding memory tasks which might cost a bit too much of your time.
It won't be a system, or a course, or just a book of puzzles to test your rote powers ...but a discourse on the practical application of memory principles. And as you learn more about your own memory, you'll take a greater interest in it, and use it to better advantage. The results of all this will be evident almost immediately--in your daily life.
After a very short while, you'll start to get the hang of it yourself. And as you become more familiar with your memory you'll derive pleasure and satisfaction from the game of finding new ways to strengthen--and reinforce your memory.

MEMORY FACETS
Memory is far and away the most remarkable of all your mental functions. Were your mind unable to store up an enormous part of all the information fed it by your senses, each new moment of existence would bring with it the necessity of "starting from scratch" in everything you think and do. You'd have to wear a little tag with your name on it, on the chance you might meet someone to whom you'd like to introduce yourself; every time you picked up a book you'd have to examine it to see how the pages turned ... and you wouldn't be able to read it anyway, because the letters and words would be meaningless to you!
Everything you do is made easier for you by your memory ... each activity is simpler because in the past you've had experiences which told your mind and body what to expect and how to act in certain situations. Your life is a continuous lesson, because the countless things you do prepare you for doing them again ... because experience eliminates travel on the trial-and-error route by teaching you the right or wrong way.
Even if you were to leave your memory completely alone, without ever giving a thought to using it more efficiently, it would continue to serve you loyally and well ... but, why settle for a meager pension when, by investing just a bit of consideration, you can reap a vast fortune? While attending a lecture you're sure to pick up a few tidbits of information, just in hearing the words.

But if you could know how to prepare all those facts for more efficient remembering, if you were able to multiply your chances of remembering tile information, think of how much more knowledge you'd be able to absorb!
The first step toward strengthening your memory is to find out exactly what it is. There's much more to it than a bunch of assorted facts and ideas swimming around in the gray matter of your brain ...as you'll discover when you read tire next few pages.
Your Entire Memory
It should be made clear, right about now, that in this book the term "memory" means more than merely the mind's retentive abilities: it means, to freely adapt the dictionary's assertion, all means by which one can recall or make available to tongue-tip any information or knowledge one feels like using. This will include every trick, gimmick and short cut that we can devise; anything we can do to avoid being caught in the mental cold.
Suppose we take a look now at your memory's total make-up ... for our purposes, its parts can be classified into two basic categories: "natural" memory, or your own mind's function of remembering, and "artificial" memory--devices for retaining information outside the framework of your mind.

All In The Mind
Your natural memory is the result of an exceedingly intricate network of retention of facts, ideas, and physical activity--all of which are learned through sensory perception, and then stored in your mind and limitlessly cross-referenced, for future use. This is how it happens:
Facts
"Camembert just had six kittens." That sentence tells you, first of all, the fact that six kittens have begun to exist. It also reveals, in the word "just," the fact that their birth was quite recent. But, because of your mind's retention of other facts, previously learned, the sentence tells you even more-you know that Camembert is a cat, and that the kittens are her offspring, and that she is a lady cat. You know these things because of your previous knowledge that kittens--baby cats-are descended from female cats... information which comes from your mind's ability to register facts.
Abstract Ideas
Now, what is a cat? Can you picture one in your mind? Unless you know Camembert, your impression of "cat" will probably not be an accurate picture of Camembert herself ... but still, you have a very good idea of her basic parts, at least. This impression is the image of an abstract idea, one built on a whole slew of impressions in your past involving cats and cat-ness. Then, too, how many are "six"? One more than you have toes on a foot, three and three, one less than days in a week, half-a-dozen... another abstract idea that is so well documented in your mind that you need give the word- and the concept- no more thought than it takes you to think of what letter follows "G" in the alphabet.
Motor activity
If you swim, or ride a bicycle, or climb up a step ladder to get things off a high shelf, or move you arm to avoid putting your hand into flame, or walk, I’m sure that you don’t spend every active moment thinking about these things; they come to you so naturally that you don’t even have to give them thought. If you type, no doubt you can now type many more words in a minute than was the case the very first time you tried a typewriter. But that took time and practice. Through repeated experience, effort and practice, your mind comes to retain memory of motor activity.
But all this mental memory-activity is only a part of the total picture. Remember, our definition of memory plainly calls for all means of making information available.
Your artificial memory
Even if you were going to be able to devote full time to the task of feeding your natural memory's supply of information, you couldn't possibly begin to nourish it nearly enough to satisfy your needs. When you come right down to it, you simply haven't got the time to remember all of the things you need to know every now and then. It doesn't pay to memorize the entire San Francisco telephone directory on the chance that you'll one day have occasion to call someone then ... when you need to, you can always look the number up. And when the time comes that you must call someone in San Francisco, the directory becomes a device for reinforcing your natural memory.
Few people can awaken themselves automatically each morning at specifically desired times, unless waking time remains constant (waking then becomes a habit, as long as retiring time is constant). But if you usually wake up at 8:00, and on one special morning you must rise at 7:00, you've got to rely upon outside assistance--an alarm clock. This is a device.
Suppose you have approximately 100 accounts in your sales
territory, or 100 members in the club of which you're secretary, or 100 relatives and friends to whom you must send wedding invitations. If you've come to know them gradually, one or two at a time over a period of years, the odds are that you remember the addresses of most of them, or at least of those to whom you write most frequently. But what if you take over a new territory, what if you join a new club, what if you take on the task of sending invitations to the guests of the groom? You couldn't possibly expect to remember all those new names and addresses right off, and it really wouldn't pay to set yourself to the task of memorizing them at the first possible moment, for, to make their recall habitual would be quite a difficult and time-consuming undertaking. So you condense the task in a very simple way: you prepare your own little address book, writing in it the names and addresses that you need. When you no longer require the bundle of information which it contains, you can put it away; or, if the information is continually needed, you simply make a habit of carrying it with you, or keeping it convenient. That book, too, is a device.
Do you get the picture? First, your mind is able to feed your memory directly--ideas, facts and motor information (physical activity)--from its own storehouse of knowledge. Because your memory is serviced by the mind alone in such cases, we refer to this activity as your natural memory.
And when your mind is unable to furnish the information which you seek, you can aid your natural memory with external devices: your alarm clock is such a device; so are your address book, your shopping list, the dictionary, your wristwatch, timetables, cookbooks, the letters on the typewriter's keyboard whenever you have to look, etc. All of this we call your artificial memory.
Memory-minimizers
All sources of information--your own perceptions, books and newspapers, people, and in fact nearly every single thing with which you come in contact--can both supply information to your natural memory, and perform as artificial memory-minimizers. Why should you bother to memorize the population figures of Bechuanaland, when the almanac is right on your book shelf? No need to memorize travel directions you'll need only once, when one of the passengers in your car can tell you what turns to make while you're driving there.
But when the information you want to make available is of so specialized a nature that no standard reference works or handy authorities are at your service, you'll want to contrive memory-minimizers that are precisely suited to your needs. For instance, the salesman's address book; the student's lecture notes and class schedule; the housewife's clippings of favorite recipes.

Memorize or Minimize
Whether you're going to memorize a specific thing, or merely keep it available for easy reference by means of artificial devices, is of course up to you. Let frequency of use, importance, degree of actual interest, and so forth, guide you in deciding. But don't forget, it's very important that your external storehouse be accessible, and even in occasional command of your attention, lest you forget to remind yourself. No sense in preparing a valuable memory-minimizer, only to misplace it and its usefulness. If you use an appointment book, refer to it regularly, at regularly scheduled times; always keep reminder notes dealing with the subject in the same place.
By organizing your time to use your natural memory only for those things for which you require mental remembering, and taking care of the unnecessary-to-memorize in an efficient manner, you'll be able to cut your task in half with surprisingly little bother. By eliminating the chore of committing many little needed things to mental memory, you leave your mind more free of interference; uncluttered and clear and with more time for all those other things that you'll want to have right with you at all times.

Memory Tricks
Your life is touched by a never-ending barrage of sensory impressions-a continuous attack by countless little "sense-arrows," which invade your body through eyes and ears, mouth, nose and fingertips...all over you! These impressions crash the gates and head straight for your brain, there to be sorted and filed for future reference.
As you read this page, vision sensarrows are carrying its message to your brain; and because your mind is aware of your overall general goal, everything is being filed under the heading of "memory" ... "making mine better." That, then, is your target: success at gathering information about the psychological aspects of memory, and utilizing it to strengthen your own ability to remember. Or, turning the minds own habits to your practical advantage, much like a matador studies the bull's style of charging and turning, and then uses this knowledge to help him turn in a better performance during the corrida.
A helpful image
To better visualize several of the basic aspects of your memory's "style" try this: imagine your sensarrows to be solid things; some will be larger than others, thus less difficult to locate in your mental filing cabinet. Then, too, should several arrows bunch together, the resulting cluster would be much easier to find then a lone and lonely arrow.
Using this image as a starting-point, let's begin to analyze your mind's memory habits, and see if they don't afford a few suggestions for strengthening your ability to remember.
Opening the drawer
Before those sensarrows can get into your mental filing cabinet, you've got to open the drawer. Let your sesame be the words, "I want to remember, I can remember, I shall remember!" As important as knowing the best ways to go about strengthening your retentive ability is your attitude. If you're convinced before you start that nothing's going to help, then you're absolutely right, even though you're dead wrong. The doubts that you have will always be present in your conscious thoughts, leaving no room for practical memories.
But an optimistic outlook clears the rocks from the road at the outset! If you're confident that you can reach your goal, the route will be fun, and everyone knows that fun is more fun than work! When you come to a hill, a difficult part of making your memory better, just making believe that it's fun will make it a lot easier!
Experiments have demonstrated that people generally retain memory of pleasant things more accurately, and for a longer time, than memory of unhappiness. So it follows, doesn't it, that by being an optimist to begin with, your memory is automatically a great deal better?
The Value of Attention
Suppose you're sitting in your parlor playing checkers, and in the next room the radio's on and a news commentator is speaking in a resonant voice about:

the latest U.S. satellite attempts;
a flood in Brazil;
A Lithuanian poet who won the Nobel Prize;
the day's World Series game;
newest developments in women's fashions;
stock market activity;
the weather forecast.
From time to time something which the commentator says will cause you to perk up your ears and listen more carefully, because he’s speaking about a subject which interests you. If your fashion-conscious, you'll certainly want to hear about the clothes you'll be wearing next season. If you're a baseball fan. You’ll be listening when he announces the score of the game. If you’ve planned a fishing trip for the next day, you'll be curious about what the weather's going to be like.
And the news items to which you pay closer attention will make deeper impressions upon your memory. Do you know who won the World Series last year? Who won the Nobel Prize? What was the high close of IBM stock last December?
Well attended impressions are large sensarrows; they can be more easily located in your memory, and are easier to remember.
Motivation for paying attention
What are the conditions which enable you, or force you, to give your attention to one thing, and not the other?
It has already been stated that a vital part of paying attention is interest. Now, the interest that I'm talking about doesn't have to be that genuine desire to know more about whatever it is you're trying to concentrate on, for its own sake; but, speaking in broadest terms, it refers to your motivation- any reason which you have for knowing or remembering.
And every reason that you could possibly have is one either of reward, or avoidance of punishment. Actually, both are pretty much the same: reward is a profit, while avoidance of punishment is a zero--better than a minus.
If you're genuinely curious about something, you desire to reward yourself with additional information about it. If you stand to make money by remembering more about the things you're selling, cash is your reward motive. If you want people to think highly of you for being able to intelligently discuss current events, or popular novels, or history, or anything...if you want people to think more of you for your remembering their names, or playing chess well, or reciting poetry, or telling funny stories, social acceptance is the reward you seek.
If you want to avoid the discomfort of having flunked your geometry course, or the displeasure of having forgotten to keep a promise, or the annoyance over having forgotten the main theme of the third movement of the Symphonie Fantastique, your reward will be the maintenance of security ... avoidance of self or social dissatisfaction. You are trying to avoid jeopardizing your chances of winning the reward of social acceptance.
Generally, the stronger your motive for remembering something, the greater an interest you'll take in it, and, consequently, the better your attention will be. And, when you pay attention, you stand a better chance of remembering!
Now... precisely what are the circumstances which act as motivations for remembering, and how do they do it?
Impulsive curiosity
Impulsive curiosity is that trail which induces you to take a second look, or to try to find out more about something, because you can't quite believe what you saw or heard the first time. The surprise, the exaggeration, the intense, the unusual...these things provide vivid impressions--large sensarrows. Someone swims across the English Channel. A woman's hat contains a live bird in a cage. A new species of animal is discovered. You meet a man who's nine feet tall. You smell garlic for the first time. You see a building constructed entirely of glass.
Curiosity out of familiarity
Curiosity inspires you to want to know more about something, after a little information, or even a lot, has aroused your genuine interest. Your hobby, your country, celebrities, a member of your family, something about which you don't fully understand, and would like to ... these things, and countless others like them play familiar roles in your everyday life. When someone begins to speak about something and you recognize what it is he's speaking about, your personal pride and ego will focus your attention upon it, so that you might learn even more about it.
Competitive nature
Man instinctively likes to win--arguments, athletic contests, fights, games ... his ego is satisfied when, after pitting his mind, or his body, or both, against other men, nature, or his own past performances, he comes in first. If you bring yourself to believe that you might become an excellent card player, your chances of remembering the rules and the finer points of play increase tremendously, because your motive is inborn, and your goal appears close enough to induce you to reach out for it. If you won a spelling bee in the fourth grade, chances are that you'll forever take pride in your superiority at spelling, and consequently will remember how to spell difficult words with comparative ease. All this ties in with ego, and desire for social approval.

Money, fame, possessions
The cash profit is a powerful motivation indeed. The contestant on a quiz show will show an amazing command of knowledge about the subject which can win for him security, the luxuries he has always sought, the fulfillment that comes of being revered by many people. The commission incentive endows salesmen with the drive to remember enormous gobs of information, from names of customers to the smallest factual details about products.
And so forth ... motivation, based on desire for reward or fear of loss, inspires attentiveness, which in turn produces strong memories. When you open the filing cabinet drawer, when you prepare your mind to receive information, the sensarrows come pouring in from whatever direction your sights are focused on.
Once you have directed your interests, factors involving the nature of the sensarrows, in regard to their relation to other sensarrows, come into play. ...

Association
When an impression reminds you of other past impressions, it hangs in your conscious observation for just a little tiny bit longer, and then becomes a stronger memory. Suppose you see a picture of the flag of Iran. You might notice at the time that its colors are the same as the colors of the Italian flag, which you remember because the Italian family living next door always dresses up the house for Christmas in red and green. Or, maybe those colors are in your drapes. Or perhaps as a painter or printer your work involves colors, and you're reminded by the Iranian flag that red and green can be mixed to produce a deep brown. Or maybe your name is George W. Randall, and your initials tell the colors, top to bottom--green, white, red.
Remember, your mind is elaborately cross-referenced and any sensory impression is just as likely to touch off a reminiscence of something seemingly unrelated, as one of something which is closely allied. And with every association the memory of an impression is reinforced that much more. One may conclude from this, therefore, that the more you know, the easier it becomes to remember.
Association is the fundamental principle behind every artificial "system" for strengthening memory. Here, very briefly, is how it works: By constructing your own list of things with which to associate, you can remember any other things that come along, simply by connecting the thing to be remembered with the appropriate thing from your artificial list. Then, by mentally thumbing through your list, you will be reminded of the thing you're trying to remember when you come to its partner. More about this very important part of memory improvement later.
Pattern
Your mind tends to organize the impressions it receives, and to reduce them to simple formulas wherever possible. This saves it, and you, a lot of trouble, because the knowledge that something fits into a certain pattern gives you a head-start in trying to remember it.
The Arabic numeral system, which is the one we commonly use, is actually little more than an ever-continuing repetition of ten digits--0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9--in a never-changing order. Perhaps you've never counted as high as 355,966 ... but you know as well as I do that the number which follows it is 355,967. That's because you know that seven follows six, in the system's repeating and repeating pattern.
How does this tendency toward pattern act upon your ability to remember? Well, for one thing, rhyming lines of poetry are more easily memorized than are sentences of prose. Words are easier to memorize than nonsense syllables. Sentences am easier to memorize than groups of unrelated words. Try naming all the letters of the alphabet, stating them at random without relying on the order in which you've learned them!
Furthermore, you'll find that it's easier to remember things in groups than singly, and less difficult to memorize lists when they are placed in alphabetical order, or in size place, or chronologically, or in any established pattern that will lend itself to your list.
Sensarrow clusters
Remember those clusters of sensarrows that are so much easier to locate in your memory than lone impressions? We've already mentioned one way in which they're formed--association. The more you know about a subject, the easier it is to recall specific things about it, because each specific thing is hooked up to other sensarrows
Pattern also plays an important part in this means of remembering by association: visualize your total knowledge of a subject as a sort of jigsaw puzzle, and think of each isolated bit of information about it as one of the parts. When you receive an impression from that part, you recognize it as part of the entire picture, and associate it with the overall subject, while at the same time classifying it in the pattern which is formed.
More than one sense
Now we come to still another method by which your mind brings into existence those easy-to-locate sensarrow clusters. When you see an apple, a little vision sensarrow is discharged to your brain. When you smell the apple, an olfactory sensarrow shoots out at your nose. When you pick up the apple and take a bite out of it, touch and taste sensarrows join the others in your brain. Even the sound of the crunch as you bite down on the apple produces another impression by which you can identify the apple you're eating. So appleness can be identified by the sum of all the impressions which you've received: a round, red, shiny thing that smells and tastes such-and-such a way, and makes a crunching sound when you bite it. The entire experience leaves a much more vivid impression with you than would just a look at an apple!
Repetition
Here's another supposition to suppose: You've found a brand new way to travel to school, or to work, or to the market. All you've got to do is walk two short blocks east and catch a bus that you never even knew about, until the people next door told you. (When they mentioned it, you paid attention because you were motivated by a desire to discover a better way to gel where you're going.)
You walk the two blocks east the next chance you get, wait at the corner for the bus, and discover that it is indeed a very nice way to get to where you're going. You decide that you'll travel that way from now on. So, each day you walk those two blocks and take that bus.
The first time you take the walk, you look around you and notice the houses, the trees, the store windows, the sidewalks, and everything else. But you don't really remember most of it. The next time you make the trip the same sensarrows as last time pop out at you. And the next time, and the next time, and the next time. Pretty soon, you know everything about that route "by heart," and all because you've been exposed to it over and over. The sensarrow which you received yesterday from the elm tree in front of the third house from the corner has piled itself on top of the sensarrow which you got from the same thing the day before, and the day before that. Repetition of the same impression anchors the impression firmly in your memory.
This is the principle of memory which helps you to learn by studying. When you want to make sure you can understand something and remember it well, you repeat it to yourself, again and again. Of course the number of repetitions necessary to commit the thing to memory will vary with variations in all the other elements that determine the size of the sensarrows. After all, if the sensarrows are fairly large, it takes comparatively few of them to build a visible cluster!

Overlearning
You can, by studying a thing for a certain amount of time, commit it to memory well enough so that you can recite it backwards and forwards, inside out and upside-down...well enough so that you really know it quite well--and still forget it a day later. This is because your retention "runs out of gas"--you haven't overlearned. Overlearning imparts longevity to your memories far and away out of proportion to the degree to which you practice it. As soon as you're sure you've got it, it's good practice to put in another half hour on it, to increase the life of your memory by weeks, months, years!
Interference
Just as a radio program comes through to you better when no static disturbs your radio's reception ... just as you can hear the music better when there's no dust on the phonograph needle ; .. just as the contents of a speech are better understood when there aren't any boisterous hecklers distracting your attention ... so your mind retains its memories more effectively in the absence of other activity on the same wave-length.
Consider these alternate situations:
A. You begin at 1:00 in the afternoon to memorize a bunch of facts about the Revolutionary Period in American History. By 3:34 you decide that you've got the material pretty well learned, so you hop off to the movies for a change-of-pace. After five hours of first the Alamo and then the Civil War, you return to your room to refresh your previous learning. But all that stuff about Texan independence, and those Civil War dates and data, have somehow gotten confused in your memory with Valley Forge, Bunker Hill and Saratoga. Before you're through re-learning the Revolutionary War, you've spent another two hours!
B. At 1:00 you get down to studying the Revolutionary War, and decide at 3:30 that you know your stuff. Then, for a cllange-of-pace, you go outside and get into a baseball game. While you're standing around in the outfiels, your mind reviews what it's just learned, and there aren't any new facts and dates to confuse you. So when you return to your room to review, you find that just about twenty minutes of study are sufficient.
Interference by material which is in any way similar to the things you've memorized, confuses your memories. After a session with the roster of your customers, visit old friends, rather than going to a party full of strangers. After memorizing your speech for the PTA, bake a cake instead of reading that book you've been saving. This principle is an important one to keep in mind when you read about spaced learning-combining study with "strategic" rest periods.

When forgetting occurs
It’s a funny thing. . . you forget the greatest part of the material which you are going to forget, very shortly after you’ve learned it. The graph of your memory curve takes a sharp downward turn almost the second you stop memorizing, than gradually levels off as time goes by. Suppose you memorize 100 words of a foreign language vocabulary list today. Depending on how well you've done your work, you might remember anywhere from none to all of it, tomorrow. But, assuming that you've done a pretty fair job, let's say that tomorrow you still retain memory of fifty words. On the next day, you might remember forty, then 35, then down to thirty words, which you'll remember for quite some time.
Now, if tomorrow you re-study the fifty words you've forgotten, by the next day you might know about 70 of the original 100.
And if you then study the 30 you've forgotten, you'll bring your knowledge of the vocabulary up to a pretty high level.
The important thing to remember is that the sooner you can review something you've memorized, the better off you'll be, since your memory from original study will be fresher, and therefore much fuller. Perhaps this is why spaced learning-the next factor we'll discuss--is so effective ... it provides a deterrent to rapid memory fade-out.
Spaced learning
If you spend an hour at study, then fifteen minutes at a "break," another hour at your work, another break, and another hour of study, you will have learned more, and memory of the learning will last longer, than if you spend three or even four--straight hours at work.
Perhaps this is due to the reverie in which you are bound to indulge during the break period, reasoning out in your own thoughts the things you've been memorizing. Or, perhaps your mind simply begins to wander when you press it for too long periods of time. At any rate, spaced learning really does work ... try it. Studying for several short periods of time, with intervals of relaxation, generally produces longer-lasting memories than does one long, intensified study period.
Fringe benefits of spaced learning
A peculiar trick which your mind occasionally plays is remembering more of something some time after memorizing it, than very shortly after completion of the memory task. This seems to be a direct contradiction of the memory curve, but it's a very specialized case. Soon after you've completed a turn at the books, you'll be able to remember a certain portion of the material you've covered, right? But, a few hours, or a day later, when you've spent a little time thinking about the subject, a few points which might have slipped your immediate memory will come to your attention through pattern and association with the related points which you have been able to remember. So, in effect, you are remembering a little bit more than you actually learned at the time of study. This phenomenon might be a delayed memory of the "forgotten" material's actual position on the page, or a belated understanding of the words which at first you failed to understand, but later found rational in the light of your thinking about the entire subject.
Dredging for lost memory
Often a name you've forgotten, or a fact that you tried to remember but couldn't, can be brought into your memory's focus through reverie ... think the thing you've forgotten-remind yourself of every point you can which may bear an association with it. It's easier to remember things that are meaningful to you, through their relation to other things you know.
Imagination
When you remember the name of a friend, or the appearance of a house, or the color of a flower, you are utilizing your memory of past impressions. But when you think of your friend growing flowers in front of a particular house, despite the fact that he doesn't even live there, and despite the fact that you've never known him to be interested in gardening ... you're employing your imagination. This is active use of the memories which you have passively collected.
Sometimes your imagination plays tricks on you, however. Have you ever walked into a room and gotten the powerful impression that you had been there before? I'm sure that you've experienced this "false memory" at one time or another ... you can't help feeling that you've heard a song before, you're sure you know that face, why can't you remember when it was that you spoke about that subject in the past. Well, it's quite likely that you never did do any of those things, although you might have heard a similar tune, or discussed something related. Sometimes an impression will touch off a great number of isolated associations in your mind, creating the composite image of the new impression so vividly that you can't help wondering...but don't worry about it--it happens to everyone. Just try hard to avoid confusion between false and real memories.
Your mind's got quite a "personality," hasn't it? And now that you know it a little better, you're ready to analyze what you've learned about it in the light of strengthening your memory, and see what possibilities you've uncovered for turning its ways to your advantage.

YoungEntrepreneur equals YE

Do you feel like you can't keep up with all the whirling technology? It can be overwhelming. Sometimes my head is spinning with all sorts of ideas that I would love to implement. The truth is I loose a lot of sleep over it. The best thing to do when this happens is to write your idea down, surely you will come back to it later.

There's a new blog buzzin' around right now called the YE Blog. This place is perfect for me to compare the Ideas I wrote down on my "Idea List" I can take my ideas and see how others have put their own business, advertising ideas to work. It boosts my confidence. Hey if they can do it why can't I right?

I have learned a few good habits from other business blog entries. It's good practice for young entrepreneurs to read up on certain business basics and practices. The reason why is it will keep you moving along in the right direction. You don't want to be complacent in the business world, even in life.

The YE Blog definately helps me relate to others. It helps me realize that you don't have to be a millionaire to be successful. That is how success should be classified, not by wealth but by passion and knowledge. But hey if you can score some cash along the way then so be it.

Just know that in the end you will not let doors close on you. The word "no" will not even floor you like it has in the past. You be confident, strong, and successful.

Dear Paris Hilton,
We have never really met but I have seen you splashed all over the media. I just wanted to thank you for everything that you do! I am so amazed by the influence you have on our society. It's unbelievable that our society is so wrapped up in your safety, well I am just so moved...
I know that there are other social problems in America that as an American Citizen I don't really have to worry about because you are distracting us from reality so again I commend you on having the spot light on you to shade us from our true problems. How do you do it Paris? How come you are so sincere? I can't believe how big of a favor you are doing for us. It really takes someone with a lot of tact to do the things you do. Like blazing your true colors of genius, the way you speak is so powerful. I'm so glad you are out of jail, I hope you don't have to go back.

Microsoft XBOX 360 Elite & More

I don't know if there are any gamers out there but hey how bout' that 360 Elite? The Xbox 360 is getting bigger and better. Doba offers the ELITE, allowing a decent profit margin if you sell it on ebay. Along with Halo 3 Beta the elite is HD compatible spitting out sick graphics. It comes with a 120GB Hard Drive HDMI output and cables. Bla Bla Bla. My review of Microsofts Elite console could potentially put the competition to shame. Not an Xbox Fan? Fine get a Wii or PS3 that's fine but nothing compares the original halo put out by Mr. Bill Gates company.





Blizzard has also Popped out of the bubble with it's World of Warcraft game. Did you know you can score a Burning Crusade Keyset from Doba? Again another excellent profit--- Sell them on ebay!

My other articles talks about selecting a good niche. Gamers are HUGE! Gamers are a huge part of the electronics world so selling niche game products are great. Start selling Wii products hey there's your niche. Do you know a lot about the PS3? Well then hey there you go just maximize profits on ebay selling PS3 Stuff! I personally waited at wal-mart in line for 43 hours to get my PS3 to sell on ebay. I must say it did quite well with my PS3 Auction. Do you know a lot about Guitar Hero? Well then hey there's a perfect item to get from doba and sell on ebay.

I think most of you may get the point. I just thought I'd show a little more niche products that doba provides.

You are looking at DOBA all wrong.

Here are the top mistakes people have when they sign up for DOBA:

  • Assume they will be a billionaire in a week...

  • Browse doba's catalog for that one magical item that will land them a huge magnificent profit...

  • Markup products super high in their store, amazon, or ebay...

Think of selling online as a numbers game, not a "get rich quick" game. Look, DOBA or any drop shipping portal will not make you rich. You have to work for it because nothing is free. This philosophy is not the cost of doing business but a fact of life.

Why look for a huge big ticket item with an enormous profit margin when you can sell thousands of other Doba products and make $100 bucks a day or even $1000 bucks? $100 is not bad for a few clicks on a few products.


When you find a few products to list on ebay, sell them and you'll see you made 5-10 dollar profit. I sell
USB/PS2 trackball mice on ebay. I make 5 bucks a sale. I know what you are thinking "Whoop Dee Do, 5 bucks." When you look at the big picture you will see that a mouse here and lock there can add up and if I list these items to end the same day then I can double or triple my profit. And if I sell 10 a week then hey that's $50 bucks per week. If you add a few more product to you line the next thing you know you've achieved your goal of over $100 bucks a day selling doba product.

I make big profits with DOBA one simple way. I'll show you what I mean.


Let's say I sell 30 different DOBA items on ebay. Every day of the week &
these 30 auctions end at 7:30 PM Pacific Daylight Time.
So 30 Doba products x 7
days a week = 210 auctions. 210 auctions x $7 profits? When it's all said and
done I profit 7 bucks an item then that is $1470!!!!
HOLY CRAP that's more than I make in the Air Force...

Hopefully this painted a picture for you. It's really staying away from the high profit margin items and searching for many many profitable items at a time. If you have experience selling on ebay then this should be a piece of cake for you!

Another tip... Keep your listing price realistic. I would sell
this for $15,000... I would target a $100-$200 profit keeping it realistic for sales on ebay. Think about what items you would start to list on ebay. Doba has a great line of things to get you started selling right away. I highly recommend the following:
  1. Cutlery
  2. Stainless Steel Flasks
  3. NFL Merchandise (Remember Football season is right around the corner!)
  4. Telescopes
  5. Belt Buckles (Always a good profit)
  6. Headphones (Everybody is looking for headphones. I sell 25 headphones a week!)
  7. Cold Steel Blades
  8. Hammocks
  9. Bean Bags

Okay I can't give all my secrets away. Remember Sell a few products at a time and watch your profits grow. Don't get in a hurry to become a billionaire and be realistic when pricing your product. You will make money only if you want to.

Tricks for searching through Doba's wholesale products

Checking out Doba's wholesale products is a lot of fun. I like to check out the pioneer in-dash systems. The profits for these on the internet are pretty good. However, I don't really look for supper popular items to sell on ebay. Electronics can be really good to sell but coming across a hot electronic to sell can be like pharana's fighting over a meal when starved. That's a fact of life. First come first serve. Besides, popular electronics become saturated on the world wide web and profit margins diminish. The whole key to selling on ebay is to find a niche product. What's a niche product? (Learn about Niches here) How about instead of looking for the giant Samsung Super TRICKED out Plasma, LCD Wide-screen bla bla bla product. Focus on the needs of consumers instead of their desires. That's when It dawned on me....

One day while browsing their online catalog I found my self looking into Doba's greddy car parts and kits. I noticed that a lot of the content describing these products flipped a switch in my head! You know the part where a light bulb appears over your head when you have a brilliant idea. I saw the word aluminum! I typed it in and found a whole bunch of stuff that I wasn't even thinking of!!! Next thing I typed in brass and found a keyless touchpad door bolt lock. What's so special about that? Well, I know that the rest of sellers weren't looking for a dead bolt lock so I listed it on ebay and spilled it for a &16.00 profit. They were all mine. I sold every one that doba had. So instead of trying to type words like "MP3 Player" or IPOD" try typing in words that things are made of.

  • COTTON

  • RUBBER

  • BRONZE

  • FELT

  • MESH

  • WIRE

  • On & On...

You will soon learn that you are finding niche products. I found a Honeywell Air Purifier by typing Allergy... I'm glad I did I've sold nearly twenty from march to the day I'm typing this out. I can sit here and tell you all day long untill I'm blue in the face about tips/trick/secrets about Doba but guess what you'll never know untill you try it and see for yourself. Protect your Auctions! Doba Can help you with Tracking

I don’t want this to happen to you when you start selling on ebay. One day I was scouting some stuff to sell on ebay at this Antique Shop in Biloxi, Mississippi. As I walked up to the front door of the shop a man stopped me and asked if this was my store. I told him I was just a customer. He mentioned he possessed a large collection of Lionel Trains that he inherited from his Grandfather. He needed cash and was trying to pawn them. I told him I was interested. After acquiring these vintage Lionel Trains I was rolling on ebay. Big cash nearly $7K in January. But remember this is when I was new and naive to ebay, paypal and USPS shipping. I was a brand new ebay baby still in diapers. One man purchased a Lionel NYC Engine from me on ebay for $500. I was stoked, considering I bought the train collection for $600 I was nearly even on my train investment.

This was one of my first sales, this Lionel 2344 New York Central Diesel Engine. The transaction was smooth my customer purchased it, paid with PayPal, I shipped it to him and I was $500 richer. I was so excited. Almost a month later Paypal took money out of my account. I was in the whole freaking out. What happened? This man filed a chargeback with his credit card company which was American Express. I was furious. I tried to find a way to get my money considering this guy had my train and now he had my money! Paypal let him keep his money and I never got my train back. It was a HUGE error on my part. I did not put a delivery confirmation on my package shipped to this man. He pretty much got a free $500 potentially $900 dollar item on ebay for FREE! Delivery confirmations are .50 at the Post office and a few cents more if you ship priority. First thing I did was filed an online Mail Fraud Form it got the ball rolling. If you need the form you can click here.

In the end I got my money back. All this trouble for a .50 cent delivery confirmation… Golden rule: Always put a delivery confirmation on your packages when shipping from home. DOBA PROVIDES UPDATED TRACKING FOR ALL YOUR PACKAGES SO THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN TO YOU!

Don't stop with Ebay! Sell Doba products on Amazon.com

Since I have a good feel for ebay auctions I decided to expand online. I just started selling on amazon.com. My very first sale was a pair of Skullcandy proletariat noise cancelling headphones. Doba offered them up for about $40 bucks. Steep price? Not really I sold them on amazon.com for $79 bones! That was the first day! Since then I have placed items that doba provides on amazon.com. If doba has a product that you would like to sell on amazon, all you have to do is see if amazon is selling it. Here are my amazon listings. If amazon has the item then you can just click the "sell yours now" button on the right pane of amazons site, state your selling price and quantity available. It's cake! Amazon selling is a done deal. When the transaction is complete Amazon will notify you through email or you can check your sales account. BAM! you made a sale, & you have the address of your customer. Poof! Doba processes your order to your customer, provides tracking, next thing you know.... your customer scores a deal, you make a profit, Doba wins, you win, your customer wins, and you start all over. Selling on the internet from home is EASY! Be thankful doba does all the legwork for you... When I sell stuff on ebay I make sure its a fast moving product. I suggest amazon for slower moving items.

Using Doba and Ebay to Generate Income
